And propane tanks, the little grill ones or the bigger cylinders, are basically bombs waiting for a bad day, so leave those out entirely. Home improvement stores often have exchange programs for the grill-size tanks. It's a two-minute stop that saves everybody a headache.

Fridges, freezers, and AC units need their refrigerant pulled first

Appliances that hold refrigerant, refrigerators, freezers, window AC units, dehumidifiers, can't just get tossed as-is because of the coolant inside. The Freon and similar gases are regulated by the EPA, and a certified tech has to evacuate them before the unit can be scrapped. Now, this doesn't always mean you're stuck. Electronics and a few odd items round out the no-go list

Most electronics, old TVs, computer monitors, printers, can't ride in the dumpster because South Carolina banned them from landfills years back. The lead and other metals inside are the issue. Best Buy and a handful of local recyclers around Columbia take e-waste, often free. Beyond that, the odds-and-ends list includes medical waste, asbestos (which needs a licensed abatement crew, full stop), railroad ties soaked in creosote, and sometimes large concrete or dirt loads that need their own dedicated container because of the weight. That last one isn't really a 'prohibited' thing so much as a 'let's talk first' thing, a full dumpster of concrete gets heavy fast, and we'd rather set you up right than have you overload a box.
